Tom Ratanavaraha is an attorney who has been volunteering for the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. Over the past eight years, hes learned a lot about the dogs that he cares for but perhaps most distressing, hes realized just how detrimental stereotypes are to the adoption process.
“I’ve never been bit by a pit bull,” says Tom, referring to the all too common assumption that this breed is incredibly dangerous. (Theyre not.) “I’ve only been bit by a Chihuahua!”
And yet, it was through his incredible efforts that the organization implemented a revolutionary program to assist these loving dogs with daily walks.
“When I first started volunteering here, we didn’t even have a program where we could take dogs out of their kennels,” laments Tom. “Once that program started, I [took] out dogs that other people wouldn’t.”
As we all know, pit bulls are a truly exceptional breed. Theyve been known to leap to the rescue of anyone in distress, and when they find their forever home? Youve got yourself a loyal friend for life.
“A lot of people will come in and take out the smaller dogs, the fluffier dogs,” Tom continues. But he knows better. “Pit bulls are strong, they’re athletic, and they’re really great dogs.”
I, for one, am very glad that someone like Tom is volunteering his free time to bring love and acceptance to an overlooked group of dogs. They clearly seem to appreciate his efforts!
